Cardiology: Medical Glossary

Heart: The main organ of the circulatory system. The heart is a hollow muscular organ that pumps blood through the body in a certain rhythm.

Parts Of The Heart

Right Ventricle: This chamber of the heart receives the deoxygenated blood. It then pumps it into the pulmonary artery, where it goes into one of the two lungs.

Right Atrium: This is the chamber where all the deoxygenated blood( coming form superior and inferior Vena Cava )goes before it gets pumped into the Right Ventricle.

Left Ventricle: This chamber of the heart receives the oxygenated blood. Then, it pumps the oxygenated blood into the Aorta where it gets sent all over the body

Left Atrium: This is the chamber that receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins, before being pumped into the Left Ventricle.

Tricuspid Valve: The valve that prevents blood that is pumped from the Right Atrium into the Right Ventricle from flowing back into the Right Atrium.

Mitral Valve: The valve that prevents blood that is pumped from the Left Atrium into the Left Ventricle from flowing back into the Left Atrium.

Aortic Valve: This is the valve at the entrance of the Aorta. It prevents the blood that is pumped into the Aorta from flowing back.

Pulmonary Valve: This is the valve at the entrance of the Pulmonary Artery the Artery that takes deoxygenated blood to the lungs to get oxygenated. It prevents the blood that is pumped into the artery from flowing back.
